I have decided to ditch purple shampoo!
Yes! I have something better than purple shampoo—a product that is more effective in toning yellowing grey hair at an affordable price and gentle on natural grey hair.
Excited to know more about it?
But first, let me explain why I ditched purple shampoo.
1. Shampoo but not a shampoo:
It is really important to understand that purple shampoo is not a shampoo. If you expect to use this and get your hair all nice and clean, that is not what’s going to happen. It is really misleading. That is absolutely nothing against purple shampoo, but purple shampoo is really just a toner. It is only used to add a colour purple to your hair, which is going to offset brassy hair.
So why spend money on a product that is not fulfilling its intended purpose?
2. Drying and Damaging:
Purple shampoos might make your hair really dry. Drugstore purple shampoos contain all the harmful ingredients that tend to dry and damage grey hair if used frequently or more often.
This is the only reason; it is suggested to limit the use of purple shampoos to just once or twice a week.
Grey hair is already dry, and the harsh chemicals in the purple shampoo can be damaging in the long term.
And if you go to the high-end shampoos, they are too expensive due to the high-quality ingredients in them.
3. Time-consuming Three-Step Hair Wash:
Purple shampoos are not applied directly to hair. Instead, hair must first be washed with a regular shampoo. The second step is to apply a purple shampoo, which must be left on the hair to tone down the brassiness for about 2-10 minutes, followed by a conditioner. It requires time.
Overall, the process of using a purple shampoo can take around 15-20 minutes, or even longer for those with long or thick hair. This can be inconvenient, especially if you’re short on time or prefer a quicker hair care routine.
4. Too Many Products:
Several silver sisters have told me repeatedly that they dislike purple shampoos because they dry out their hair and make it more frizzy. To deal with the frizz, they need to invest in other hydrating and nourishing products for their hair, which is an unnecessary addition to their product shelf.
5. Not Great For Treated Hair:
After getting a keratin treatment, I was worried about how to neutralize the brassiness that developed afterwards since I was not supposed to use harsh chemicals and I didn’t want to spend a lot of money on a high-end purple shampoo since I already had two on hand. Purple shampoos can strip off the treatment quickly due to the harsh chemicals they contain.

Benefits of Silvering Tonal Control Over Purple Shampoo:
- Its formulation is free from harmful chemicals that are non-drying to grey hair.
- This vegan and cruelty-free product is rich in hydrolyzed quinoa protein that prolongs the toning effect on gray hair.
- And the bonus point is it adds shine and conditions hair.
- I love its customizable toning property, where I can adjust the intensity of the toner based on the level of toning required on the day I use it. So it’s a win-win!
- Now I can tone down the brassy hair using my favourite hair care products.
How to Use Silvering Tonal Control:
Always use Silvering Tonal Control with clear/white shampoo, conditioner, or styling cream/mousse.
Always adjust the number of pumps depending on your hair length and the level of brassiness. Combine a few drops of Tonal Control with your preferred product, and voilà, your DIY purple shampoo is ready!
Here’s how to use it depending on your needs:
Regular Use: Add Tonal Control to your clear/white shampoo, conditioner, or styling cream/mousse. Apply it to your hair as usual. To maintain brightness, use once every 3–5 washes.
Neutralizing Yellow: Add 3-4 pumps of Tonal Control to your conditioner and apply it to heat-damaged or brassy areas of hair. Leave in for 5 minutes and rinse. For a more precise application, use less conditioner.
To Remove Brassiness from Old Dyed Ends on a Grow-Out: Create a masque by mixing a double dose of your regular conditioner with 4–8 pumps of Tonal Control. Apply to old dyed hair and leave it in for 5 minutes, then rinse thoroughly.
I tested the Silvering Tonal Control with my regular conditioner. My hair was super brassy and required a leave-in toning.
First, I washed my hair with the regular shampoo.
I then added 10 drops of Tonal Control to a double dose of my usual conditioner and kept it on my hair for roughly fifteen minutes. I gave it more time because I needed a significant toning impact.
You will notice a stronger toning effect the longer you keep it on.
After 15 minutes, I rinsed off the conditioner.
The results were just mind-blowing!
